Middle School Curriculum
The Middle School curriculum has at its heart 11 key goals:
- The development of the intellect
- The development of a personal identity
- Self-expression
- Building community
- Healthy relationships
- Service to others
- Relating to adults
- Developing business skills
- Assuming responsibility
- Productive physical labor
- Becoming a responsible young adult and citizen
Public
Montessori middle school programs seek the empowerment
of adolescents through the encouragement of both
individual responsibility and cooperative skills.
Based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills,
all subjects are interrelated, and large blocks
of thinking time allow the emerging cognitive
ability to explore possibilities and ideas. Curricula
are interdisciplinary, multi-stranded, and emphasize
practical life application in each subject area.
Cooperative skills are enhanced through community
service, team-building activities and multi-age
mentoring opportunities. Students participate
in job shadowing internships in which they prepare
a resume, participate in Job interviews, and
spend three - five days shadowing a professional
in a career of interest. Middle school students
provide support in science, math and reading
for younger Wilson students.
