Program Statistics/History

Named for Tina E. Whidby, a prominent civic leader, teacher and principal for 25 years, Whidby Elementary opened in 1960. Whidby's Montessori Program, a school-within-a-school magnet program, began in 1982 under the leadership of Mrs. Vivian Harrison.

It was the second of HISD's Montessori programs to be established - Dodson's Montessori program being the first in 1976, under the leadership of Dr. O. D. Curtis. It was the bold vision of these two pioneering educators that helped establish the Montessori Method of teaching children in HISD's public schools.

As of 2008, Whidby has concluded 26 successful years of providing Montessori education under the supportive leadership of Ms. Cheryll York, Principal, the dedication of a wonderful Montessori staff, and the support of its many parents.

Whidby prides itself in maintaining all the aspects of the classic Montessori model, providing a true Montessori learning experience for children ages 3 - fifth grade. Everyone at Whidby looks forward to an even more successful future as we work to provide a quality Montessori education for the children in Houston and HISD.
