Los Niños

Community Family Centers (CFC) implemented the Los Niños Early Childhood Education Program in 1998 to address the lack of bilingual, culturally-sensitive early childhood education services in Houston's Greater East End. CFC is a non-profit, United Way agency that offers the Los Niños program as part of a network of interconnected programs to strengthen families and enrich the quality of life in the community through education and social services. By making high-quality Montessori education accessible to low-income Hispanic children, Los Niños improves the literacy, language, and life skills of families in a historically underserved community.

Los Niños Early Childhood Education Program educates 3-6 year-old children, year-round, at the YWCA: M.D. Anderson/Magnolia Park Branch. Depending upon the class or work schedule of the parents, children at Los Niños can attend the program either part-time (from 8:00 to 11:30 AM or 12:00 to 3:30 PM) or full-time. The program is closed only on observed holidays, such as Christmas and New Year's Day, and operates full-days during HISD school holidays and in-service days.

Five highly-trained teachers operate three multi-age Montessori classrooms at Los Niños. At capacity, the program can educate the full-time equivalent (FTE) of 55 children. Each classroom has one lead Montessori teacher, who has received additional training and Early Childhood Education certification by the American Montessori Society (AMS). In each of the larger classrooms, a teacher's assistant supports the lead teacher and helps prepare the classroom environment.

In addition to providing high-quality early childhood education for pre-school children, Los Niños incorporates strategies for supporting family literacy and continued education. This bilingual, intergenerational approach to education improves the language and literacy levels of the entire family. All parents with children at Los Ninos participate in monthly parent sessions on a variety of informative and educational themes. While their children at Los Ninos develop the skills they need to become the leaders of tomorrow, parents are encouraged to study through CFC's Adult Education program or pursue a college degree to begin building a better life today.
