Who are the Friends of Montessori?
The mission of Friends of Montessori (FOM), a nonprofit organization, is to further the acceptance and integration of the Montessori approach in the Houston public schools. FOM raises the funds necessary to implement these programs and provides guidance and support to the teachers, parents, and administrators at its schools.
FOM is a partner with HISD in three schools. The Montessori program at Garden Oaks Elementary, now serving 132 students from pre-K through 6th grade, opened 14 years ago. In response to the success of and demand for this program, along with a recognized need for a public Montessori middle school, HISD partnered with FOM to make Woodrow Wilson the first all-Montessori campus 3 years ago. For 2008-09, Wilson will be fully Montessori for pre-K through 7th grade, expanding through 8th grade in Fall 2009. Whidby Elementary has been a Montessori magnet since 1982. Whidby is located in Houston's South Union Community, serving low to middle income families. The Montessori program enrolled 132 students in 2007-08, with a total of 563 students at Whidby.
FOM's goal is to further expand the Montessori method in Houston's public schools, while providing continuing support to existing programs.
